Running in Durango
Have
you ever been to Durango, Colorado?
Well, Durango is an amazing
little mountain town in Southwest Colorado. It’s one of the
most beautiful places you’ll ever visit and there's a ton
of stuff to do - www.durango.org/Activities.
There are great trails
for mountain biking, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
is a historic train that runs from Durango to the mining town of
Silverton, we are 36 miles from the archeological wonders of Mesa
Verde National Park, there are cool shops and galleries on historic
Main Avenue and best of all for runners, over the Columbus Day weekend,
October 6th & 78th, 2007, there is the Durango Double - a
festival for runners.
We have the Horse Gulch Trail 25K & the Telegraph Trail 50K
on Saturday, October 6th and the San Juan Mountains Half Marathon
& the Durango Marathon on Sunday, October 7th. The Durango Double;
held each October under the changing Fall colors is a weekend-long
festival celebrating running, health and fitness and the spirit
of human achievement. Unmatched for beauty, you’ll agree that
Durango is truly a runner’s paradise!.
At the Durango Double you can run any one race or you can “Do
the Double” by running a trail race on Saturday and a road
run on Sunday. Wait, it’s not as crazy as it sounds. Doing
the 25K & Half Marathon double is just a little longer than
a marathon, but half way through you get to stop, eat pasta, drink
beer, sleep and then get up and finish the next day and you don’t
have to be in marathon shape! Your longest training run only needs
to be 15 – 18 miles; so this is the perfect option for someone
who is training for a late fall marathon or who has not quite gotten
all the long run miles done for marathon training.
Plus, if you do the Double and you are going to do something unique
and you're going to get a very cool Mesa Verde-style platter to
commemorate your achievement.
From Jeff Galloway - "Durango produces the best series of races
in a weekend that I have seen in my 47 years of running. The town
is interesting; there are lots of other things to do. The locals
are friendly and make you feel like you are special. This is a well
run event and I recommend it above all others for a Fall weekend
trip!" Thanks, Jeff!!
