TRAINING

Training for an endurance running event is a challenging and rewarding process.

Durango Double: 25K & Half Marathon:  Your longest training run only needs to be 15 – 18 miles; so this is the perfect option for someone who is training for a late fall marathon or who has not quite gotten all the long run miles done for marathon training.

Durango Double: 50K & Marathon:  Most runners come to this sport with a metabolism trained for speed: I.E. burn lots of carbohydrate fast. What you need for ultras is a metabolism trained for endurance: I.E. be stingy on carbo burning and burn fat instead. Any damn fool can run fast for 20 miles. To run well for 50 requires a specific type of response from the endocrine system. You can train your body to deliver that, but only if you run long enough to get tired and hungry. For most runners that implies doing 3 or 4 runs in the range of 25-30 miles.  Advice from Karl King

Telegraph Trail 50K

Train like a marathon, but make your longest run 28 - 30 miles.

Jeff Galloway - Jeff's injury-free training principles have been used successfully by hundreds of thousands of runners of all abilities, including beginners. His training schedules have inspired the second wave of marathoners who follow the Galloway run-walk, low-mileage, 3-day-a-week recommendations to an over 98% success rate!

John "the Penguin" Bingham - Marathoning for Mortals.  Once considered a superhuman accomplishment, the Marathon and Half Marathon are now within the reach of mortals everywhere. Let John and Jenny show YOU the road to the Finish Line.

Hal Higdon - It is a gently progressive program involving four days of running a week. The long run in the first week of training is a relatively easy 6-miler. Each weekend, the long run gets longer, peaking at 20 miles three weeks before the marathon.

Advanced Marathoning, by Pete Fitzinger- Want to run a faster marathon? Commitment and hard work are essential but you also need to train smarter to run faster. Advanced Marathoning contains all the information you’ll need to run faster, peak for multiple marathons without injury, and meet your marathon goal—whether it’s running a personal best, qualifying for the Boston Marathon or winning your age division.
